The Island

2:53 am PHT

I loved it! I think it’s the best movie I’ve seen so far this year. (I’m most probably exagerrating, but then, I can’t deny the big smile on my face during the movie’s ending credits.) So go watch it!

Of course it’s not a perfect movie. The product placements were quite bad and annoying. And in hindsight, the plot holes were quite large.

But the story and the action is really good. I think the pacing is perfect too since I wasn’t left wondering “Huh? What happened?” or left to twiddle my thumbs in boredom for a few minutes. I came to watch the film with absolutely no premise of the story at all, just that it’s a good movie. And since I had no idea what the story is about, I got very much into the movie’s tale with a child-like innocence and wonder. Because of that, my suspension of disbelief worked extra hard and my critical thinking was suppressed (or maybe I wasn’t in a nitpicky mood that time). I subsequently enjoyed the film for what it is.

I’ve since read that virtually every plot line in the film is not original, with most people citing Logan’s Run as the largest influence. But since I haven’t seen that movie (and many of the others), it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the movie.

Ewan McGregor shines in this film much better than in Revenge of the Sith. Scarlett Johansson is a wonderful surprise—very pretty and acted mostly convincingly. Steve Buscemi is still a riot, and Sean Bean is also good. Michael Bay, as director, has brought us some more really exciting blow-things-up scenes like he did for Armageddon and Pearl Harbor, but this time, he adds an impressive car chase scene, though it’s just a little bit over the top.

Note to myself: To really enjoy a movie, don’t research about it before seeing it.
